exploring the 8 limbs of yoga

The practice of yoga is so much more than the postures (asanas) that are most often focused on in classes. In this 6-week series we will dive deep into the 8 limbs of yoga, as set out in the yoga sutras, an ancient yoga text. We will challenge our reliance on the physical postures of practice and instead use our asana practice in conjunction with other powerful yoga tools that often remain unutilized. In this way, we will stretch our practice into a deeper, more potent, more fulfilling experience.

As we move from week to week we will explore the different limbs: the Yamas and Niyamas (the ethical principles that offer guidance for our behavior toward self and others), Pranayama   (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (single pointed focus), Dhyana (meditative absorption), and finally Samadhi, the final limb and ultimate goal of practice.

As we explore each limb we will build practices that purify body, mind, and heart. We will strengthen our dedication to practice by igniting passionate Tapas energy. We will immerse ourselves in breath practices that soothe the emotional body and act as a bridge to our more internal manifestations of practice. We will progressively draw our awareness away from our external experience and into that meditative space of pure awareness, which reveals our true nature. We will approach the gates of samadhi, which might sound unattainable if viewed as a constant state, but if we approach it in small moments, then joy, fulfillment and freedom can indeed be ours!
